Five Reasons Why Your Car Could Have Low Compression

Car is a combination of complex mechanisms. And each part has an important role in ensuring that your car is working at its peak. Compression is one such element that is directly responsible for the car’s performance as well as the health of the engine.

When gas and air mix in the engine cylinder, compression is created. And it is this force that makes the car work. When you have low compression, you may hear a misfire on starting the car. You may also observe difficulty in driving the car. And in the event of zero compression, your car will not start at all.

The following are the 5 reasons your car could have low compression.

  1. Low compression due to damaged Piston – Pistons are very close to the engine. Thus, they are more exposed to wear and tear. Piston helps in maintaining the proper compression by handling the combustion. However, when they get damaged, the gas starts leaking. This, in turn, results in low compression in your car.
  2. Fuel washed Cylinders causes low compression – Each cylinder is covered with the layer of oil. This protects the fuel from entering the motor. However, sometimes due to overheating, too much fuel enters the motor. This washes away the protective layer. In this scenario, your cylinder may not work efficiently. Thus resulting in low compression.
  3. Leaking Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves creates low compression – These two valves work in harmony. Intake valves take in the air and gas and create combustion. Exhaust valve, on the other hand, throws out the gases created during combustion. In case any of these valves are impaired or suffer from wear and tear leakage happens. In this scenario, the gas releases resulting in lower compression.
  4. The blown head gasket can result in low compression – Head gasket is the seal between the cylinder and the engine. Its main function is to keep the oil and gas separate. Over the period due to wear and tear, the head gasket might develop a crack. This crack is enough to let out the pressure. And this, in turn, causes the car compression pressure to drop.
  5. A worn timing belt is also responsible for low compression– The timing belt performs the function of the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. The working timing belt ensures that proper combustion takes place. It also ensures that the gases release on time. However, if the timing belt is damaged or is worn out, it will not be able to time the opening of valves. And this will result in no combustion at all. And no combustion means no compression.

Thus, as soon as you experience misfire or difficulty in driving your car, check the compression of the vehicle. If the car is run with low compression, it will adversely damage the engine. And we all know, checking and maintain proper car compression is economical and safer than replacing the engine.
